Description

NGC3718 is probably my best galaxy image published so far and quite possibly my best ever. This in part due to fortuitous set of circumstances where not only the sky was clear but was clear with good seeing for quite a long stretch of weeks in 2009. Part is due to the subject itself, the nearest thing the boreal celestial hemisphere has to Centaurus A (admittedly on smaller and dimmer scale but still formed by the same process, that of tidal disruption). The key thing I had in mind was to bring out the tidal elongations of outer regions of the galaxy which are WAY fainter than the main body, while preserving the ghostlike quality of the whole and the band of dust at the centre as it is stretched under the gravitational pull.
